Patchwork apron dress

Inspired by Edgar Degas’ The Bellelli Family, this duster shirt reimagines the dress worn by the woman in the painting. It draws from a study of antique garments—their proportions, gathering techniques, and construction details.

Cut from antique French linen, the shirt is deeply gathered at the shoulders and back, creating a voluminous yet fluid silhouette. The collar is trimmed with antique lace, while the buttonholes are finished entirely by hand using 100% silk thread. Each ceramic button is handmade in the studio and fired in the ceramic workshop next door.

The generous length allows it to be worn as a shirtdress or layered as a duster. A piece that carries the weight of history, balanced with the ease of wear today—each stitch honoring both the antique textile it is made from and the tradition of garments crafted to endure.
